Candle Care
How to get the most out of your scented candle

There is nothing quite like lighting your favourite candle after a long day. The gentle glow, beautiful fragrance, and calming atmosphere can instantly transform your space into a sanctuary.
At WixScents, each of our candles is hand-poured using 100% soy wax, and with a little extra care, you can enjoy a cleaner, longer-lasting burn while getting the very best fragrance experience from your candle.
Here are our top candle care tips to help your candle perform beautifully from the very first burn to the last.
1. Let the Wax Melt to the Edge on the First Burn
The first burn is the most important burn.
When lighting your candle for the first time, allow the melted wax pool to reach the edges of the container before extinguishing the flame. This usually takes around 2 to 4 hours, depending on the size of the candle.
Why is this important?
Soy wax has a memory. If the candle is blown out too soon, it can create a tunnel down the centre, leaving unused wax around the edges of the jar. This means you'll get fewer hours of enjoyment from your candle.
Pro Tip: Aim for a full melt pool on every burn whenever possible.
2. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately 5mm.
A properly trimmed wick helps:
-
Prevent excessive smoking
-
Reduce soot build-up
-
Create a cleaner burn
-
Improve the candle's lifespan
-
Maintain a steady flame
If the wick becomes too long, the flame may become larger than intended, causing the candle to burn too quickly.
3. Never Burn for More Than Four Hours at a Time
While it can be tempting to leave your candle burning all evening, we recommend a maximum burn time of four hours.
Burning for extended periods can:
-
Cause the container to become excessively hot
-
Shorten the candle's lifespan
-
Affect fragrance performance
-
Create a larger flame
After four hours, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, trim the wick, and relight when desired.
4. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts
Open windows, air conditioning units, and ceiling fans can cause uneven burning.
Drafts may cause:
-
Flickering flames
-
Uneven wax pools
-
Smoke production
-
Shorter candle life
For the best experience, place your candle on a stable surface away from moving air.
5. Keep the Wax Free of Debris
Always ensure the wax surface is free from:
-
Wick trimmings
-
Dust
-
Matches
-
Other foreign objects
Keeping the wax clean helps maintain a safe and consistent burn.
6. Store Your Candle Correctly
When not in use, store your candle in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
Direct sunlight and heat can:
-
Fade candle colours
-
Impact fragrance quality
-
Cause wax discolouration
-
Reduce overall product longevity
Replacing the lid after use can also help preserve the fragrance.
7. Know When It's Time to Stop Burning
For safety reasons, discontinue use when approximately 10mm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.
Continuing to burn a candle once most of the wax has been consumed may cause excessive heat buildup in the container.
Candle Safety Reminders
Always remember:

✓ Keep candles away from children and pets
